Brother

Today will be a short post. I'm proud of my younger brother for saying his piece via the Newpaper about the recent case that happened at Singapore's sports school. Its great to have such Physical Education teacher taking a firm stand on such things. Yes, it is a privilege (not a right) and parents of such errant kids should be educated or reminded if they do not realise it yet. Enough said!

It was great catching up with a good 'ole friend' after so long. AlhamdulilLah, he gives good, logical advice...Yes, I admit sometimes women tend to be irrational although the degree of rationality is subjective, ha! Subhan Allah, that is the fitrah of women, different from men :)

Anyway, have a safe flight, take care and see you real soon. Hugs and kisses to mama Zehra and papa Hasan. TaqabbalLahu minna wa minkum, taqabalLahu ya Karim, minal aidin wal faizin :)

Impending Arrival

Masya Allah, alhamdulilLah ala kulli haal... just spoke to my sister-in-law and she shared the good news that her third child would probably be a baby girl :)

For us in Singapore, we will pray that the delivery in November will be smooth sailing and that mother and child be safe and baby be healthy, Ameen ya Rabbal 'Alameen.

Afternote: Mum's prayers came true, subhan Allah... La hawla wala kuwata ilLah bilLahil 'Azeem :)

The Chant of the Victorious

As I reflect on the meaning of the 'Eid Takbir... sad nostalgia rests on my heavy heart. Truly Ramadhan is about spiritual cleansing; not about being busy with shopping for cookies, new clothes, new coat of paint and fresh set of curtains, cushion covers, etc to prepare for Syawal. May Allah SWT protects us from emulating the millah of the jahiliah (culture/way of life of the ignorant), ameen ya Rabb.

Mama

"The heart of a mother is a deep abyss, at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness. For a mother is the only person on earth who can divide her love among her children and each child still have all her love. For a mother's love grows by giving."

A tribute to my light, my strength... no words of gratitude could do justice for all that you've done.

Appreciation

Masya Allah, thanks for this dedication and the early birthday greetings. Indeed a nice song from a talent who can strum the guitar, play the piano and pen beautiful lyrics. All I can say is that it is not the wait that matters, if its meant to be, it will happen. Truly, we plan with the best of intentions but the fact of the matter is Allah knows what is best for His servants.

Afternote: Richard Marx, Bryan Adams are just among those evergreen musicians that I used to admire during my youth... he has a collection of beautiful songs with meaningful lyrics, some of which I can truly relate to :)

Exams

La Hawla Wa La Qu'waata Illa Billahil Azim (There is no power and strength except with Allah, The Grand, The Great)... AlhamdulilLahx3, I've managed to attain Statement of Achievement (SOA) for ACTA CU5 this week... I could have not done it without the magnificent grace of the Almighty SWT.

In retrospect, being an instructional designer is not enough... there is a need to be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the WSQ that we are submitting for approval. But I am not one who likes to specialise... I'd rather appreciate all genre (if I can call it that) of knowledge as it gives me a deeper appreciation of Allah's Wisdom, subhan Allah.... it does make one realise how insignificant  he/she is and keep the humility in check :)

Anyway, learnt alot especially in consultation with the assessor... she's got loads of experience. Next, time to celebrate before I hit the books again for another round of exam in early Sep. Wish me luck!

Power of True Intent

Tears kept trickling down my cheeks as I watched this heart-rending movie, subhan Allah! Instinctively I'm reminded of mum, her unconditional love and relentless sacrifices. More importantly, her yearning to be a guest of Allah's most sacred house... It has been my greatest wish to bring her there and may Allah pave the way for us in the near future, insya Allah!

This movie also reminds us among other things, the power of a true intent, compassion, humanity, and that Allah's help can come from places we never thought of. So strive in the way of Allah and don't despair, as rightly pointed out in the testimony of those who watched the movie here.

Audacity of Hope

 

 Laskar Pelangi, a novel by Andrea Hirata, was based on the writer's own experiences. It is about an inspiring teacher and her 10 students in the poverty-stricken Kampung Gantong in Belitong. The poor condition of their school building does not dampen their high spirits and hopes for a better future. Brilliantly inspiring!

Sang Murabbi

Subhan Allah, this is a brilliant and inspirational movie reflecting the trials and tribulations of the late Ustadz Rahmat Abdullah. For those who are keen to start doing da'wah, you'll benefit from watching this movie. Truly, patience, sincerity, sacrifice in da'wah are for the sake of Allah SWT alone :)

Muslimah

When I watch this movie, "Perempuan Berkalung Sorban" (Lady with a Turban), it struck me that truly our beloved Prophet SAW is the best exemplar for humankind with regards to how to engage and treat women.

Indeed, in Islam, women hold a privileged position if one truly makes references to the Quran and Hadith and contemplates on sirah (history) of RasululLah SAW and his family, particularly his wives and daughters.

Perhaps this movie is deem 'controversial' because of the half-truth depiction of life in a pesantren (traditional Islamic school)... one of my beloved uncle went to Pesantren and women there are not treated in such a manner; The film-maker has the amanah (responsibility) to convey the whole truth and nothing but the truth... as such 'Islamic' movie is seen by the world over. This is what we call Media Literacy :)

Afternote: I can't stress enough the importance of seeking knowledge then operationalise one's life accordingly, see Islam in its totality (syumul) and truth (haq) and not take bits and pieces out of convenience. May Allah Azza wa Jalla protects us from the hellfire, ameen ya Rabbal 'Alameen.

Think Positive

I was looking forward to get my PMI exam over and done with by May. Al-hamdulillah ala kulli hal (Praise is due to Allah in every circumstance, even the depressing ones). Due to an administrative glitch, I now have to prepare for it only in early September. Truly Allah Azza wa Jall is Oft-Knowing what is best for me.

Afternote: Mum, it'll be your birthday present... I'll promise to study and get through this with flying colours, insya Allah. La Hawla Wa La Qu'waata Illa Billahil Azim (There is no power and strength except with Allah, The Grand, The Great)... Btw, this doa is said to be a cure for various types of sadness so for those who are feeling a lil down, read various useful tips via  Don't Be Sad website.

Islamic Living

I actually read the book by Habiburrahman El Shirazy before watching this movie (have watched Part 2 as well, masya Allah... truly Allah SWT works in miraculous ways).

If only more of such Islamic movies were made, depicting the reality of the Ummah's life according to Sharia' law. Truly, the islamic paradigm is different from the western paradigm, subhan Allah.

Mum has become a fan of another author from Malaysia, Hasrizal Abdul Jamil and I know deep in her heart, she would have wished that he follows the footsteps of Habiburrahman El Shirazy and make movies too.

Afternote: I must admit, with humility and a tinge of embarassment, that I've not been keeping myself updated with Malay authors of today... but that does not mean that I've lost my Malay/Muslim identity :)

Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

Reading the book by John Perkins entitled "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man", I'm perpetually feeling sick in my gut just visualising how the stories unfold in my mind's eye... subhan Allah. Corporatocracy... are we truly living in an era void of conscience and humanity? Truly, how long does one have in this world to be so preoccupied with it until one forgets the eternal life in hereafter? May Allah SWT bestow these people with hidayah, which their soul desperately need, whether they realise it or not, ameen. I'll end this post with a video by the author himself, sharing a piece of what he wrote in the book.

Humanity

I'm not a big movie fan but this movie, Pensil (Pencil), caught my eye and brought me to tears simply because I have a soft-spot for the discriminated.

Here's one man, who despite his lack of ability, strives to make a decent living for himself... what a true Muslim should do... ikhtiyar and not be quick to seek help from others... and yet there are heartless people who are quick to bring him down or discriminate him. May this movie create the awareness in us to love one another for the sake of Allah SWT and to defend those who are being discriminated, ameen. 

Afternote: I know that some critics may say "It is just a movie, not a reality" but what if it is real, would you sit by the side and be the audience or would you have the courage to do something about it... that is the question.

Qaisarah Batrisyia

AlhamdulilLah. On the morning of 10 April 2010, my cousin and his wife became proud parents of this adorable baby girl, Qaisarah Batrisyia. May she grow up to be the intelligent queen (as her name suggests) with a heart filled with wisdom, ameen.

Afterthought: With Faris and Qaisarah, the extended family continues to grow... awaiting the confirmation of another 'impending arrival' :)

Family First

AlhamdulilLah, alhamdulilLah, alhamdulilLah... A new-found friend's search to find his life companion  has finally ended. And it is true what the old and wise say - a man needs a woman by his side in order to find balance in his life, without one, he somehow feels 'incomplete'. What Ustaz Rahmat said in one of his previous lectures rings true, men and women are designed differently and placed in the scheme of things for a specific reason, subhan Allah.

Afternote: Noble is one who can love someone for the sake of Allah SWT alone. May his mum gain a companion to help her raise the kids to be good citizens of the world as one united family, ameen :)

GrandPa

Grandpa was constantly at the back of my mind simply because today is his special day. AlhamdulilLah, alhamdulilLah, alhamdulilLah... after going for regular therapy, he seems to have regained his health after a bout of lymphoma-pneumonia remission. May Allah SWT bless this great man and place him among the ihsanul kamil in jannatul firdaus, ameen ya Rabbal a'lamin.

Glad tidings

"And among His signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your hearts. Undoubtedly in these are signs for those who reflect." [Surat ar-Rum: 21]

As mum shares the good news about my younger brother getting engaged in June, we got to discussing what is Islam's views on dating? Not from the Western Worldview but from Islamic Worldview especially in the 21st century.

She said it boils down to one's intent, meaning you are not interested in testing the water, rather you have fixed your sight on a 'spouse material' and would like to engage him or her within the purview of the Syariah law in order to make an informed decision.

Hmm... perhaps this video could shed some light to what mum meant... In Islam, there is no such thing as love before marriage but it is preferable to look at the person you want to marry, interact and select accordingly, based on one's virtue, wealth, nobility and beauty, in this order of importance.

P/S: To my lil brother, marriage is a tremendous responsibility so prepare your mind for it. It is not just about love but mercy too. May Allah SWT bless you and lady D with a smooth path towards a blissful married life, Ameen.

Rottnest

Subhan Allah, this is a beautiful place. To a certain degree, I'm glad my pal is enjoying his work there at Rottnest and then back at Perth. On the other hand, the reason why mum discourages me to stay in Alanya for the long-term was because of such a surrounding. She constantly reminds me that life on earth is paradise only for the Jahiliah. May I not lose sight of the ultimate purpose of life on earth, insya Allah.

P/S: Let's all commemorate Earth Hour and switch off unwanted lights and start living green.

Divine Love

Our beloved Prophet SAW once said, "A companion whom you should stay close to is one whom when you look at him/her, you're reminded of Allah SWT, when you hear his/her words, your knowledge increases and when you observe his/her deeds, you're reminded of Hereafter."

Oh Allah, enable Your servant to see the truth, to love another whom loves You above all things such that it strengthens my love for You, Ameen.

P/S #1: Happy birthday to my lil Iqhwan. Had a blast over the weekend and thank you for paying your tired ol' aunt a visit, extending a brief but much needed respite from work work work *hugs*.

Appreciation

Hmm this is interesting. A long-distant friend who, out of the blue, shares music by Buckethead. On hindsight, yes, he knows that I used to be a fan of Pat Metheny during my youth... and that I have a 'thing' for talented guitarists.

Thank you, Muris, for sharing 3 files from Buckethead with me recently. I've post one of them here and here's the other one. Enjoy the great guitarwork by this mysterious talent :)

True Love

"A child is a deposit in the hands of the parents. The child’s pure heart is like a precious gem. Like wax, a child can take any shape. When small, it has not taken any shape. It is like pure soil. You will reap what you sow in pure soil."

Following up from my earlier post and after a brief correspondence with my uncle, I'd like to say that if children are taught the tenets of Iman (belief), the Quran and the commandments of Allah SWT and accustomed to doing them, they will attain religious and worldly happiness. And their parents and teachers will share this happiness of theirs.

If they are not taught and trained, they will become unhappy. The sin of each evil they will commit will be given to their parents and teachers, too. Allahu ta’ala declares in the sixth ayat of Surah at-Tahrim, “Protect yourselves and those in your homes and under your command from the fire!”

It is more important for a father to protect his children against the fire of Hell than against worldly fire. And protecting them against the fire of Hell is to teach them Iman, the fard (commandment) and haram (prohibition) to accustom them to worshipping, and to protect them against irreligious and immoral friends. The source of all kinds of immoral deeds is an evil friend.

Our beloved Prophet SAW, by stating, “All children are born fit and suitable for Islam. Later, their parents make them Christians, Jews or irreligious”, indicates that both for the settlement and for the annihilation of Islam, the most important work on children can be done when they are still young.

Then, the first duty of each Muslim is to teach his children Islam and the Quran al-karim. The child is a great blessing. If the blessing is not appreciated, it will be lost. Therefore, pedagogy, i.e. the science of teaching children, is a very valuable science in the Islamic religion.

Afternote: My colleagues, soon-to-be-mums shared their concerns with me over lunch one day, whether they will be good mothers to their first born. I told them, trust in the God-given maternal instincts :)

PMI

From 27 Feb onwards, I will go through a 5-week PMI PMP certification course. Have asked around and it seems that the end-course exam is rather tricky. Please pray for me so that I will pass the exam, Ameen.

You may be wondering, "What is an instructional designer doing taking up a course meant for a Project Manager?" Let's just say its about optimising resources ;)

Guy Talk

My brother was channel surfing over the long Chinese New Year weekend before he settled on Oprah. I became equally curious to find out what the guest speaker, Steve Harvey said about what made men tick:

1. Every man has a plan. "Men don't come up to you to just talk. We come up to you with a plan. When a man approaches a woman, he already knows what he wants from her, but he doesn't know what it will cost. How much time do you want from me? What are your standards? What are your requirements? Because we'll rise to the occasion no matter how high you set the bar if we want to."

2. Men are like fishermen, "You've got sports fishermen, and you've got guys out there fishing to eat. You've got guys who are fishing to keep the fish, and you've got guys who are fishing to catch them, unhook them and throw them back. You've got to determine along the way which one of the fish you're going to be."

3. The way a man introduces you gives good insight into the status of your relationship. Steve said, "Men are very protective. We mark our territory. If a man loves you...he's willing to give you a title after a while. You're going to be his lady, his woman, his fiancée, his wife, his baby's mama, something."

4. Men are fixers, not talkers so better get to the point. "When you say, 'We need to talk,' men put up the barriers. I tell ladies, just sit down and strike up a conversation."

In summary, his advice for women is, "You've got to quit lowering your standards. Set your requirements up front so when a guy hooks you, he has to know this is business. And don't let the man set the pace of the relationship -- it's always the woman who has total control. With all that power, why do you suddenly relinquish this power just because you want a guy to accept you? That's stupid. Say: 'Look, if you want to be with me, this is what you got to do. This is what it takes to get to me. You know you've got a keeper when your man wants to make sure you're always safe, coz every man wants to protect his woman."

Afternote: Hmm, interesting. Felt the urge to read his best seller. Truly, Islam is beautiful as there are clear guidelines of how to conduct a successful marriage in Islam with adab and clearly-defined roles for each party. So ladies, don't settle for less ;)

The Exemplar Beyond Compare

AlhamdulilLah, I must thank Sis Yati for giving this book to me, The Exemplar Beyond Compare: Muhammad Mustafa SAW by Osman Nuri Topbas. An inspirational read! I get newly acquainted with the beautiful attributes of the Uswat' ul-Hasanah - Merciful and Compassionate, subhan Allah!
 
I acknowledge it is not easy to emulate the Prophet SAW in every sense of the word; we must ikhtiyar (make an effort) and not use the excuse "He is a prophet, who are we?". The Quran clearly states:
 
"Certainly you have in the Messenger of Allah a quintessential example for one who hopes in Allah and the Latter Day and remembers Allah much." [al-Ahzab: 21]

"O Believers! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and render not your actions vain." [Muhammad: 33]

"Who so obeys Allah and the Messenger, they are with those unto whom Allah has shown favour, of the prophets, the saints, the martyrs and the righteous. The best of company are they!" [an-Nisa: 69]

Afternote: Our beloved Prophet SAW dutifully did his daily and sunnah ibadah in order to attain mercy from Allah SWT so that during the Day of Judgment, he can intercede for his Ummah. How can we not follow his example if we truly love him?

Token of Gratitude

Reading Ayyuhal Walad strengthens my conviction that Islamic education must be taught through direct contact with teachers. This is how wisdom, not just knowledge, was acquired as one cannot gain wisdom from just reading because Islam is not a religion of self-interpretation. The guidance and support of a very knowledgeable and pious teacher is essential.

AlhamdulilLah, with the grace of Allah SWT, Syeikh Abdul Halim has helped my friends and I along the path to Allah, adopting the Islamic Worldview with greater consciousness and purpose. He's been very generous in sharing his wisdom and knowledge with us. And we look forward to future classes with him, insya Allah.

Mohd Faris Mohd Hafiz

Mum and I were planning to meet 3-week old Mohd Faris over the long weekend. Nonetheless, Allah SWT has other plans for us. Truly, there is hikmah in the way things turned out, subhan Allah. Isn't he simply adorable? Congrats to cousin Adni and hubby Hafiz on the adorable lil tyke. May he grow up to become the 'praiseworthy knight' his name suggests - live a life of personal jihad while protecting his loved ones from harm's way.
 
P/S: Looking at the photo, I instinctively thought of my 2 young heroes. Hope lil Irfan and Iqhwan are enjoying their vacation. Miss you loads!

Wish I Was There

I wish I could attend this seminar with my cousin in March coz I've benefitted alot just by watching the series of 29 talks the speaker has on Youtube. I would expect that this would be the brilliant follow-up or sequel coz I definitely agree with this statement:

"The heart of the believer is lit with a basic consciousness and awareness of Allah SWT. Consider what happens when that believer learns and establishes the proper foundation to understand Allah’s qualities from the Qur’aan and Sunnah…his heart will burst and beam with illuminating light, the light which results from an understanding of his Creator."

Subhan Allah, truly:
“... the fuel of revelation reaches him, gives glad tidings to his heart…the light of revelation is added to the light of his own God-given nature and the two combine to become, “light upon light” - Ibn Qayyim [Tafseer of Surah Nur :35]

Off late, our local daily has been reporting on the breakdown of the Malay/Muslim community. It is odd that authoritaties taking care of the Malay/Muslim community could not figure out what is truly wrong with the community... It is not a new problem.

January came and is about to leave us. Alot has happened this month - some people are departing, some are transferring, some remain true to their conviction, some just gave up trying. Whichever camp you belong to, its your life and you have approximately 344 days to live it so take control.

Don't Sigh

It is human nature to seek answers. Interesting enough, as we seek answers, the QalamulLah (Quran) already provided the answers:

1. We ask, "Why am I being tested?"
The Quran answered in Surah Al-Ankaboot:2-3, "Do men imagine that they will be left (at ease) because they say, We believe, and will not be tested with affliction? Lo! We tested those who were before them. Thus Allah knoweth those who are sincere, and knoweth those who feign."

2. We ask, "Why a test to this extent?"
The Quran answered in Surah Al-Baqara:286, "Allah tasketh not a soul beyond its scope. For it (is only) that which it hath earned, and against it (only) that which it hath deserved..."

3. We ask, "Why I do not get what I yearned for?"
The Quran answered in Surah Al-Baqara:216, "...but it may happen that ye hate a thing which is good for you, and it may happen that ye love a thing which is bad for you. Allah knoweth, ye know not."

4. We ask, "Why we feel frustrated?"
The Quran answered in Surah Al-Imran:139, "Faint not nor grieve, for ye will overcome them if ye are (indeed) believers."

5. We ask, "How can I counter this frustration?"
The Quran answered in Surah Al-Baqara:45, "Seek help in patience and prayer; and truly it is hard save for the humble-minded..."

6. We ask, "What do I get from all this?"
The Quran answered in Surah At-Tawba:111, "Lo! Allah hath bought from the believers their lives and their wealth because the Garden will be theirs..."

7. We ask, "Who do I turn to?"
The Quran answered in Surah At-Tawba:129, "...Allah sufficeth me. There is no God save Him. In Him have I put my trust, and He is Lord of the Tremendous Throne."

Afterthought: It is seemingly counter productive to sigh. Everyone has 2 choices - be accoubtable for your life and do something about it or wallow in self-pity and lament your poor situation in silence, thank you.

Family Gathering

Today shall be a short post. My cousins from KL would be dropping by later and my cousin from Kluang will also arrive shortly. As my relatives are widely dispersed across Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and one currently finishing her studies in Australia while another in Canada... it is times like these when we gather around at grams and catch up with each other's life. Islam's Journey

Sheikh Abdul Halim triggered this post. Being the inquisitive creature that I am, I decided to 'investigate' since he posed the challenge about figuring out how Islam reached South East Asia :)

From the early days of Islam, there were two routes eastwards: the land route and the sea route to China which, for example, the uncle of the Prophet Muhammad S.A.W - Saad ibn Abi Waqqas sailed.

Accounts of how Islam spread to this region vary according to different translations. Nonetheless, anyone keen to understand the History of Islam should read the book by Professor Masud ul-Hassan. Or you can read the simplified version of "The Coming and Spread of Islam in South East Asia" here and here.

Afterthought: The deeper I dug, the more I want to know the Origins of Islam... hmm, its an assignment on its own but its worthwhile because it strengthens my Islamic identity, Subhan Allah. Read 1000 years of missing Muslim heritage.

2011

They say "A house is not a home". I'm just glad my nephews will get a nice roof over their heads by end of 2011 and may their home be filled with laughter and love as they grow up to be useful citizens of the world. Truly, blessed is a family that stays together, ameen!

Afterthought: In retrospect, I recalled countless stories about our beloved Prophet SAW and how simply he lived a life full of substance for the Hereafter. Truly, he is the exemplar beyond compare. That simple life is all that I desire - "Our Lord! Grant us good in this world and good in the hereafter, and save us from the chastisement of the fire." Ameen. [Surah al-Baqarah: 201]

Gentle Reminder

Allow me to kickstart the  new islamic year with this post...May we benefit from this constant reminder...

Before Imam Syafie returned to rahmatulLah, he said,
"Whoever wants to leave this world safely, practice these 10 habits":

1. Be accountable to ALLAH SWT.
Invite others to good deeds, prevent others from bad deeds, love piety and abhor vices.

2. Be accountable to our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW
Salawat to the Prophet, hold steadfastly to the Syaria’ law, rely on the As-Sunnah (Hadith), love Prophet’s sahabat and compete in seeking Allah’s pleasure

3. Be accountable to oneself
Less sleep, less food, less speech (aka more ibadah), be content and prudent with one’s wealth.

4. Be accountable to the Angel of death
Complete ibadah left behind previously and do them in multiples, seek forgiveness from those oppressed or discriminated, be prepared for death and love Allah SWT.

5. Be accountable to your grave
Avoid urinating all over, conduct more Tahajud and help those who are oppressed or disciminated.

6. Be accountable to good and evil (Munkar and Nakir)
Abstain from telling lies, speak the truth, leave vices and constantly give advice or receive advice to remind each other to do good.

7. Be accountable to the scale (Mizan)
Suppress anger, more zikir, sincere in deeds and willingness to bear hardships without complaining

8. Be accountable to the bridge (Sirat)
Avoid back-biting, be pious, help the pious, prefer congregational prayer to praying alone

9. Be accountable to the Gatekeeper of hell (Malik)
Fear Allah SWT, be kind to and patient with your parents, donate publicly or in secret, improve one’s akhlak.

10. Be accountable to the Gatekeeper of heaven (Ridhwan)
Submit to Allah’s will, be patient during hardships, be thankful for Allah’s bounty and repent from sins.

Dads for Life

An interesting conversation over dinner triggered this post. It is not about "It is cool to have kids"... although I know that was not the true intention of the comment.

Parenting is a lifetime commitment and Obama said it best when he says it takes courage to be a dedicated parent. To become a father is not difficult, but to be a father is coz it doesn't matter who he was; it matters who the child remember he was...

This heartwarming video is a tribute to the fathers and 'future' fathers out there, enjoy :)

GrandPa

"And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count; it's the life in your years. Because I've loved life, I shall have no sorrow to die."

When aunt Sophie told me that Grandpa has frank diabetes, I was surprised especially since my maternal family does not have a genetic history of diabetes. Aunt Sophie explained that it was due to his lymphoma going through a relapse and that sometimes diabetes is an outcome or a sign of the impending pancreatic cancer. My heart just sank.

When I was staying with Grams a few years back, we fought the lymphoma and grandpa was in remission then. And to hear the bad news now... it seems unfathomed! Mum told me that we cannot fight fate... but that does not mean that we give up fighting. I pray that grandpa will continue to do his glucose check and take his regular dose of medicine. Aunt Sophie's words kept ringing in my head "he's a walking time bomb due to his heart condition, diabetes, lymphoma".

No one could truly empathise with what grandpa is going through. Being the quiet old man who would rather fight his battles in silence than complain and cause anxiety among his wife and kids, I truly understand why he is the way he is. He said before "I'm ready to die"... and his time will come... I wish that the immediate and extended family are willing to let him go when his time comes. Regardless, we love you, grams *hugs*

P/S: Please pray for the wellbeing of this man whom we love dearly.

San Jose

I was supposed to be at San Jose last week but due to certain circumstances, I could not be there. Nonetheless, I'm glad to be able to at least read what a good pal has taken away from the sessions there [thanks Maish for sharing] :)

Idul Adha

Have you ever, in the midst of a hectic day, pause to wonder, "What exactly is our purpose on this earth?"

As mum and I bid farewell to Aunt Sophie and hubby who are heading to Mecca for the Hajj or Pilgrimage, I'm reminded of the fact that man's role on earth is as a servant and vicegerent of Allah SWT. May I don't lose sight of what is truly important, God willing.

P/S: Mum, I know it has been your desire to visit the Holy land. I pray that Allah SWT will allow me to take you to Mecca in the near future, Insya Allah.

Biker Bliss

The ride from Bugis back home was exhilirating. I did it, Regy so don't doubt my ability alright, ha! Hmm, can't remember when was the last time I rode a bike... must have been ages! You know that feeling of being free, that's how it feels riding a bike, the world is your's alone and just spend sometime for I, Me and Myself and leave the madness behind ;P

Anyway, as promised, I will fully optimise it while Regy is away in San Jose/San Francisco the next 2 weeks, heavenly bliss!

Conscious Marriage

I finally finished Dance of Love. Verdict: I agree with the ending in finding your other half who shares your belief or spirituality because it is much easier to raise a family when both parents have similar core values and belief system - "The mind seeks an easy relationship; the heart seeks a spiritual partner. The more a relationship supports each person in awakening to a spiritual aspect, the more expansive, spontaneous, wonderful and passionate it will be."

The next book I'm reading has a similar ring to it "Conscious Marriage: A New Model for Making Marriage Work". Stay tuned.

Love is All Around

More 2 Life

Opportunities presented themselves to me this week. Just when I was mentally toying with the idea of 'greener pastures', offers came a knocking, partly due to the visibility I get via my LinkedIn account. Allah knows what is best for me and with time, the story will unravel itself, so stay tuned! I’ll end this post with a nice video (depicting my current state of mind at this juncture).

P.S: The networking tonight with the corporate group went well. Given a choice, I'd rather spend more quality time with my family and lil cousins (miss you guys, focus on your exams and we'll have a blast afterwards)

Today, I felt compelled to share my thoughts about a topic close to my heart - children. With the impending divorce surrounding a friend and a cousin, instinctively my heart goes out to the children who probably won't truly understand why is there a need for dad and mum to live in two separate places. Mum said there are many factors that make or break a family unit such as external factors (outside 'distractions', extended family, etc) or internal undercurrents due to the lack of communication or a clash in personalities and values.

And that a marriage can withstand the test of time if there is a genuine connection between two persons, complemented by honesty, integrity, solid communication and that willingness to keep working on the relationship. Hold steadfastly to your faith and be close to Allah SWT as you go about your role, right mum?

With the best of intentions, I pray that I would have the constant faith and patience and not put my future kids through such an ordeal, so help me God, Ameen!

Halal.Haram.Syubha.

Just had a discussion with my uncle about chocolates. Its not easy just by looking at the ingredients to see if the product contains halal ingredients because halal also encompasses the process of making the product.

For illustrative purpose, I used to LURVE Ferrero Rocher, Kinder Bueno and Nutella...Found out that Ferrero products can be haram due to the following ingredients:

Soya lecithin E322
These are emulsifiers obtained from animal or vegetable materials through physical procedures. Most lecithins are commercially obtained from soya beans. MUIS classify this as Shubha by way of its source or manufacturing process; advised to avoid products with this ingredient.

Calf rennet
Rennet is used to make cream, butter, cheese, drinks, etc and is extracted from animal stomach and is Halal (in the form of cheese, etc) even when extracted from an animal that has not been slaughtered Islamically according to Hazrat Imam Abu Hanifah (rahmatullahialay) BUT it is better to abstain from it and whey carries the same ruling.

Whey powder
Whey is a product of the clotting of milk.

Halal Status of Whey
The media and the type of rennet may influence the halal status of whey produced from them.

The following are the requirements for us to be sure that the whey is halal:
- Mother culture media has to be halal.
- Bulk culture media has to be halal.
- Microbial rennet preparation has to be used.
- Dryers where liquid whey is dried to make whey solid or powder should not be used to dry animal based media and rennet whey to avoid contamination.

It is advised that we restrict ourselves to only halal or kosher certified whey as shown by the halal or kosher symbols such as UD, KD, and COR.

Non-halal or Kosher certified whey made even with non-animal based media and microbial rennet is not recommended because the cheese manufacturer can change the media and rennet source any time without notifying Muslim consumers.

The enzyme most commonly used to make cheese is rennet, which comes from the stomach of calves. The rennet is Halal if the calf was slaughtered according to Islamic requirements. Whey prepared with microbial enzymes is Halal. Whey is used in processed foods such as crackers. Call the food manufacturer to determine the source of the whey.

Another source indicated that some Ferrero products from UK are halal:
Ferrero UK Limited
Halal – Kinder – Bueno, Chocolate, Surprise; Tic Tac – Fresh Mint, Lime/Orange, Orange
Ferrero Rocher Chocolates – contains calf whey powder/syrup

Yet another source have indicated ingredients such as alcohol flavourings which can be halal (alcohol halal? hmm) or haram (containing calf rennet).

Conclusion:
It is not easy to find UK made chocs (saw some at Guardian but on rare occassions). So as a precautionary measure, always check if the 3 ingredients mentioned above are present. It is better to err on the side of caution, don't you think?

A non-muslim pal asked before why is it important for Muslims to eat halal? Islam is a religion, which encourages its practitioners to eat halal and safe food from Allah's bounty.

Just the thought of 'tainting' my system with haram food and then prostrating to Allah SWT with a 'tainted' body just does not cut it for me. We have to submit physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually to be a true a Muslim or Muslima.

After all, we live but a mere few seconds on this earth... such supposedly 'incoveniences' when weighed on the scale are insignificant to the life we look forward to in Jannah, insya Allah :)

When I saw this nice quote, it immediately brought me back to the discussion I had with a dear old friend over the weekend. No matter how obstinate a stubborn parent is, once tended with constant tenderness by the best intentions, things will fall into place. I wish him all the best :)

Dance of Love

Most books talk about "What's wrong with relationships and how we can fix them?" and the beauty of this book is that it focuses on "What's right about relationships that are already working successfully?" with concrete examples from real couples the author interviewed for this book.

Relationships or any form of commitment for that matter, are never easy... so is marriage, both parties have to work on it. The love experience is largely that of our own essence, as it is evoked by the presence of the other. Presence means presenting our own essence, taking off the masks and defenses, having our hearts open. It is the commitment to work diligently on their relationships, to persevere in resolving any difficulties and to consistently support each other.

I love the use of analogy of yoga to describe relationships - relationship requires awareness, focus, intent and consistent practice.It teaches us to stretch and strengthen parts of ourselves, to take unfamiliar positions while remaining centered and in balance, to direct our energy in new ways and to relax. We have the choice to be protective and avoid pain, or to open and learn to work with it. Yoga is challenging and invigorating, hard work and great fun. It gets easier and brings new insights as we move along the path. And it requires... commitment, commitment to integrity, to embrace our wholeness and the wholeness of our partner... seeing the oneness while seeking resolution of differences, without attempts at manipulating one to satisfy the other.

Hmm, the book asks if you have been in a relationship where in large or small ways, agreeing to things that you don't want to do? How often do you lie about your feelings or behaviour for fear of rejection, anger, loss, pain or hurting someone's feelings? And how often are you able to maintain your integrity in the face of those fears? These are questions worth exploring.

The books encourages us to practice the Voice Dialogue - recognising our inner selves: the pusher, pleaser, controller, critic, vulnerable child, rebel, good parent, and many more. Giving the various selves a voice helps us discover what each one feels and thinks, what it needs and what it has to offer. Some of these are primary selves, those which we most value and identify with as who we are. Opposite each primary self is a disowned self, one which we judge as bad or deny exists. When some selves take exclusive control and others are shut down, inaccessible, we are automatically out of integrity. All aspects of our wholeness want to be recognised, accepted and integrated in some way.

Interestingly, our partners will often embody the selves we disown (polar opposites attract) and this can be a source of great conflict for couples or else they can come to appreciate that each partner holds an energy that the couple needs to develop... bottomline we need to look out for complementary characteristics in that each partner brought balance and new ways of being for the other to integrate - the key: allowance, agreeing and disagreeing at times. And being mindful or one's Aware Ego is the central aspect of personality which recognises and honors all the many facets of ourselves, consciously choosing which energies to bring into expression at a given time.

I've just finished chapter 2 of chapter 9 and what I gather from this book is that relationships require self-awareness, persistence, flexibility, patience and lots of honest communication, which is the subject of the the subsequent chapters so stay tuned!

Mum's wishes

It has been an interesting few months. Only good tidings await and I'm ready for them.

Today shall be a short post. I just want to wish mum a wonderful birthday. Just like any other day, today is a day to say thank you especially for all that you do. It's a day to bless you, for all that you do especially for just being you.

I'm inspired by the Project7Ten documentary that showcases eco-friendly homes hence this post.

For skeptics, this is no gimmick; LEED certification program actually makes self-sustaining home that is kinder to your pockets while benefiting human kind in the long run:

• Reduce waste sent to landfills
• Conserve energy and water
• Be healthier and safer for occupants

I read the book before I watched the DVD with my family and it clicked. Unconditional love means loving the Creator above all coz nothing truly belong to us as our lives on earth are a mere test of our conviction and faith. Allow me to leave you with the OST from the movie, enjoy!

Accidental hero

Today, upon reaching home, mum told me that my youngest nephew was hospitalised. He had second degree burn from scalding. Mother and child will remain in the hospital for further observation. My heart went out to my nephew.

Accidents happen to the best of us and I hope my sister-in-law does not get too caught up with the feeling of guilt; everyone wants to be the best parent for his or her child.

There is hikmah in all situations. Perhaps, we will be more mindful in ensuring a safe haven for our children at home. For a start, read this article on preventing scald burns.

Morning light...

As I gazed at the morning sun rising from the east, sipping my coffee, with the daily news in my left hand... I wonder when was the last time I stopped to smell the roses.

I guess just like in the past years, with the kickstart of my 12 projects, would the days pass me by so swiftly that I'll lose track of what's important to me? My heart is weighing heavy on the days to come, partly due to the transition in power, partly due to the uncertainties ahead... I have to get rid of this melancholy. Hmm, for those reading this, sorry... this is just a vent. Regardless, don't let life's little pleasures pass you by. Enjoy this nice melody while you are at it...

Read Right!

Subhan Allah. When I read the book Read Right, it truly shows that the brain is an amazing organ. Dr Tadlock is right. Sometimes we do not give ourselves or our babies or kids enough credit in the ability to 'softwire' the brain towards excellence. Perhaps its the social stigma or the lack of knowledge. I'd recommend this book to first-time parents... a must read! :)

Not good at it...

Heller Keller used to say, "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen, nor touched but are felt in the heart". Then Blake Pascal added, "The heart has its reasons which reason knows not of".

Today I had an awkward situation. Why was it hard to just come out and say it like it is? I guess its partly coz I could not vibe or read what the other party is truly thinking or even feeling. I'm not good at this and have never been good at it.

Yes, I'm straightforward when it comes to giving opinions or perspective but when it boils down to expressing my own feelings about something dear to me, I get tongue tied. Why? Its not like I do not know what I want and what I do not want. I think I have clearly communicated this.

Perhaps its the traditonal gal in me or that its too soon. Give it time, zah... insya Allah, when the moment is right, the words will naturally flow both ways.

P/S: Meanwhile, grams, forgive me for buying time... I promise this time, its gonna be right. Be there please... insya Allah.

Raising A Reader

My recent project requires me to research on how to instil the love of reading in kids. A book that I've just read is Read to me: raising kids who love to read . The author generally outlines the profile of each age group and recommended books to facilitate the joy of reading at their level. Other good reads include They're never too young for books: A guide to Children's Books for Ages 1 to 8 and Effective Reading Strategies.

I'm sold on the benefits reading early has on a child's mental and emotional development. And it is important that the whole family is sold on this idea such that reading becomes a central part of everyday family life.

Doing this project makes me wonder... will I be a good mother and educator to my future kids? Subhan Allah, motherhood is such a fulfilling vocation and I pray that I will have the opportunity to experience it, insya Allah.

This week has been a blast, spending time with those who matter most to me. I was asked the question recently "Where is home?"... Simply put, its where your heart is :)

Cyber Safety

I'm so thankful to Allah SWT that recently we embarked on a project called Cyber Safety. I've learnt alot and applied the tips to ensure that I protect myself and the interest of those close to me from 'mistaken identities'.

After awhile, you just get good at sniffing lies upon lies... with technology, it gets so much easier. And at the end of the day, always trust your instincts especially after istikhara :)

Made to Stick

I simply love this book "Made to Stick". All marketers out there - yeah you - this is one read not to be missed. All you need to do is apply the simple SUCCESs principles in all that you do and voila.

Simple: Find and share the Core
Unexpected: Get attention (remember AIDA?) through surprise and hold the attention/interest
Concrete: Help people understand, remember and coordinate
Credible: Help people believe (internal and external credibility)
Emotional: Make people care, use the power of associations, appeal to self-interest and identity
Stories: Get people to act

With the use of these principles, we need to also be mindful of symptoms such as the curse of knowledge, decision paralysis, etc.

1. Go to LibraryPressDiplay and read global digital newspapers vs printed newspapers
2. Cut your showertime by a minute and save 9 litres of water
3. Use less paper because to produce 1 kg of paper demands 300 litres of water

You have a choice. You can make a difference. So make a concerted effort. Help us help ourselves and our future kids.

Humility

In life, what truly matters is neither the riches of the earth nor the title to a name but the outreach of a helping hand of a kindred spirit, a stranger who is colour blind yet sees clearly from the heart. You won't know when you need help so live life with humility. Truly, everything you have on this earth belongs to the Almighty.

Let me end this short post with a nice poem by Oliver Goldsmith, "The Deserted Village" especially this part:

Ill fares the land, to hastening ills a prey,
Where wealth accumulates, and men decay.
Princes and lords may flourish, or may fade;

Moving On...

The past year has been, in retrospect, a trying year but I'm not complaining coz I feel that things happened for a reason and the Almighty knows what is best for me.

Looking back, work has been fulfilling and in the midst of my hectic work schedule, I managed to take time off and spend it with mum... just the two of us, something which I truly appreciate as it brought us closer.

With the end of Maulidur Rasul, a new chapter of my life begins. And I'm truly looking forward to what life has to offer... it would simply be beautiful. Let me leave you with a compilation of inspirational poems...

Words

There were times when words are not enough to salvage a situation because they lack genuine meaning. And then there were times when not enough were being said, which even actions could not make up for them; the well-meaning intentions buried under the silence.

Through it all, human beings are still creatures of habit - they wanted to be told and reminded on a regular basis that they are needed or loved. Not many people are comfortable with the silent undying love, with the old ways of 'actions speak louder than words'...

The answer is clear, everyone has insecurities and fear and it is precisely that fear... yes, the fear of being taken for granted, the fear that the love has gone, the fear of losing the familiar, unless the vow or promise is renewed.

The Lucky One

I've just finished reading Nicholas Sparks' "The Lucky One". I could especially relate to how Beth and Logan felt about destiny. As wierd as it may sound, and as 'freaky-wierd' first impression Beth had about Logan, he turned out to be the perfect gentleman, my kinda man. I wish there were more of such love stories in the world, its morbid enough as it is. If only life can be that simple... actually it is, its all in our psyche... Anyway, its time to update my shelfari....

Verses of love

I managed to read the book before I watched the movie and it clicked! No love is greater than the love for the ONE and taking care of God's creation on earth is but just one of our duties, regardless if the outcome is reciprocal or otherwise. Because the fundamental point is that nothing truly belongs to us and our lives are but mere tests of our faith, subhan Allah. I leave you with the soundtrack from the movie, enjoy :)

Reflection for 2009

I'd like to share the following poem with you, to commemorate the beginning of the new Islamic year. Maal Hijrah to all :)

The Difference

I got up early one morning and rushed right into the day;
I had so much to accomplish that I didn't have time to pray,
Problems just tumbled about me and heavier came each task,
"Why doesn't God help me?" I wondered,
God answered, "You didn't ask".

I wanted to see joy and beauty,
But the day toiled on grey and bleak,
I wondered why God didn't show me,
God said, "You didn't seek".

I tried to come into God's presence;
I used all my keys at the lock,
God gently and lovingly chided,
"My child, you didn't knock".

I woke up early this morning,
And paused before entering the day;
I had so much to accomplish that I had to take time to pray.

Believe

Mum taught me never to give up hope and to have faith... when you truly believe, every challenge you face will meet its resolution. How true.

Rest In Peace

When I heard the news that we've lost mama, it brought back memories of when I lost grams. My only regret was that I've not had a chance to meet and know her in person, a strong woman who tended to her kids with unconditional love. May Allah bless her soul.

Tribute to Mama

Deep sadness encapsulates me today. If only time could stand still and not rob us from spending moments with the one we love. A mother's son, torn and battered by the sharp knives of hurt and deceit, from the same blood that flows within him, prevents him from comforting the soul, whose eyes refuse to close until the heart is at peace in the arms of her dearly beloved. Oh Angels from the heaven above, comfort Ane and keep her safe from harm's way. A lifetime of regret shall not prevail this time please God...
